Student Grant Round Two Winner

Tan Pang Ren, a third year student at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was announced as the winner of the second round of the Avid® Asia-Pacific Student Grant. Pang won for his entry entitled “Longing”.

Pang’s entry was selected out of a strong field of 68 students from around the Asia-Pacific region including entrants from Australia, China and Japan.  Pang won a mobile studio consisting of Avid Media Composer® editing software on an HP Compaq Mobile Workstation and a Sony Digital Video Camera.

“Longing” is based on a personal experience of learning how to cope with missing a loved one. Upon winning the contest Pang said that he felt very lucky and excited.  Pang is currently participating in a 6 month exchange program in Hong Kong and he stated that he was looking forward to making more films and documentaries with his new equipment.  Furthermore, Pang believes that winning the prize will make a significant difference to his final year project next year.

The judging panel was impressed by Tan Pang Ren’s entry stating:“This short piece succinctly but successfully encapsulates the silent anguish of the painter. Through clever use of subtle effects, the filmmaker juxtaposes the painter’s tears with the images on the canvas. The choice of music was also especially apt, creating an atmosphere of introspection with the overall dreamlike feel of the piece further enhanced by muted colours and soft glows, blurring the lines between illusion and reality. The filmmaker also exercised commendable restraint in the execution of this highly sophisticated piece, with the final result being effective yet understated.”

The Avid Asia-Pacific contest, which is run in conjunction with Sony and HP, continues for the next 7 months and is designed to encourage students’ creativity, enthusiasm and commitment to media studies. Grants are awarded every two months and the deadline for Round Three is 31st January 2008.

Students are asked to upload a 60 second video clip to www.avid-asia.com/competitions. The clip can be new or old content created by the student either in the course of their studies or during their own time and the winning entries will be judged on originality and creativity.
